Assists Clergy During Services.
BILL BRENNAN HONORED - First Grace Parishioner to be Commissioned as a Verger.
Congratulations to Grace parishioner Bill Brennan on being Commissioned a Verger in the Episcopal Church Diocese of Long Island. Event was recognized this past Sunday at Grace Church by Rector Walter Hillebrand.
A Verger in the Episcopal Church is a layperson who helps the clergy with public worship, organization, and welcome. The role of verger originated in medieval England and is unique to the Anglican Communion. The Vergers Guild of the Episcopal Church (VGEC) is a service organization that supports vergers and other church members.
Here are some of the duties of a verger:
Prepare for worship: Vergers prepare the altar and sacred space, and ensure that readers are prepared. They may also assign and ensure the presence of chalice or eucharistic ministers.
Organize processions: Vergers are often seen leading processions.
Serve as acolyte master: Vergers may serve as the acolyte master.
Answer questions: Vergers can answer questions about the church, upcoming services, and current programs.
