Question - How to Honor Thy Mother?

Newsday Religion Section
Question - How to honor thy mother?

The answer calls us into a deeper reflection that transcends tradition, sentiment, and even religious norms. To honor one’s mother is to acknowledge not only the women who gave us life but also to revere the sacred feminine force she embodies—what some might call matriarchal energy.
Much of our spiritual formation has been shaped within a patriarchal framework. Yet, the Spirit—the breath of life, “Ruah” in Hebrew in the book of Genesis 1:2 —is described in the feminine form. From the very beginning, the Spirit hovered over the earth, nurturing creation into being.

Motherhood is more than a biological role. It is a cosmic expression of love, care, protection, and the genesis of life itself. Consider “Pachamama,” or Mother Earth, who births, nourishes, and sustains all that lives. To honor one’s mother is to honor and celebrate this sacred life force—both personal and
universal.

It means extending our gratitude to all those who have mothered us in one way or another—whether through blood, bond, or brief but life-changing kindness. There are those whose maternal care has mended wounds, provided shelter, or offered the kind of love that reaffirms our humanity.
May our lives reflect the love we received. And may we never cease to honor the mothers—biological or chosen—who have shaped us.
